Air Sealing My Home: The Real Impact on Comfort and Efficiency

As a homeowner dedicated to enhancing my home’s energy efficiency, I became curious about air sealing and whether it could improve comfort and reduce energy consumption. In this article, I’ll share my journey with air sealing, offering insights into how it works and its advantages.

Why Air Sealing Matters

Before I began my air sealing adventure, I discovered that sealing air leaks in a house can lead to numerous benefits, such as improved energy efficiency, minimized drafts, and better indoor air quality. Air leaks often occur through gaps and crevices in the building structure, letting conditioned air escape while allowing outdoor air to enter the home.

My Experience with Air Sealing

First, I carried out a comprehensive assessment of my home to pinpoint areas where air leaks were likely to be present. I found leaks near doors, windows, electrical outlets, and plumbing fixtures. After the evaluation, I started sealing these gaps and cracks using different materials:

• Weatherstripping: I fitted weatherstripping around doors and windows to eliminate drafts and enhance insulation.

• Caulking: I used caulk to close gaps around window and door frames, as well as plumbing and electrical openings.

• Spray foam: I employed expanding spray foam to seal more extensive gaps and cracks, especially in the attic and basement areas.

• Insulation: I supplemented insulation where it was absent or inadequate, such as on the attic floor and external walls.

The Outcome: What Difference Did Air Sealing Make?

Once I completed the air sealing process, I observed a marked improvement in my home’s comfort levels. The drafts that previously caused discomfort in my living areas were significantly reduced, and indoor temperatures became more uniform across the house. Furthermore, my energy bills started to decline, as my heating and cooling systems no longer needed to work overtime to maintain a comfortable indoor climate.

An unexpected advantage of air sealing was the enhancement of indoor air quality. By closing gaps and cracks, I managed to lower the intrusion of outdoor allergens, pollutants, and moisture, resulting in a healthier and more comfortable living space.

Based on my experience, air sealing truly does make a difference in a home’s comfort, energy efficiency, and indoor air quality. By investing effort and resources into sealing air leaks, homeowners can enjoy a more pleasant living environment while also lowering their energy expenses and carbon footprint. If you’re contemplating air-sealing your home, I wholeheartedly endorse it – the outcomes have been well worth the endeavor.
